RIVER CITY CONNECTION TOUR - FORT LEAVENWORTH

Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (est. 1827) is the oldest Army installation in continuous service west of the Mississippi River. In the early 1800's, it played an important role for settlers and wagon trains heading west.

Generals George Custer, William Sherman and Robert E. Lee were some of the well-known Army officers stationed at Fort Leavenworth during the 1830's and 1840's. Prominent officers stationed at Fort Leavenworth in the 20th century include Generals MacArthur, Eisenhower, Omar Bradley and Colin Powell.

Today it is the home to the Combined Arms Command, the Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks.

Ground was broken in July 1990 for a monument dedicated to the black soldiers who were members of the 9th and 10th Cavalry known as the Buffalo Soldiers. It should be in place by July 1992.

The Frontier Army Museum depicts the role of the Army in the western expansion.
