GROUP TOURS
Leavenworth City Tour
A guide provided by the Leavenworth Historical Society, will join a bus tour and give the highlights of the historical sites around the city. Points of interest include the Harvey House, historic homes, the Riverfront Community Center Union Depot, Leavenworth's Victorian Carroll Mansion & Museum, the United States Federal Penitentiary (drive-by only), the Dwight D. Eisenhower Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and the University of St. Mary. The tour lasts one hour. The charge is $4.00 per person. Contact: (913) 682-7759 or 682-4113.
 
Carroll Mansion & Museum
Guided tour of the 19th century 16-room Victorian mansion furnished in the style of the period. Open April through October, Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; November through March, Tuesday thru Saturday, 1-4:30 p.m. Closed January and major holidays. Tour lasts about one hour. Fee $4.00 per person. This may be combined with the Leavenworth City tour. The two will take about two hours for a combined price of $8.00 per person. Contact (913) 682-7759 or 682-4113.
 
Fort Leavenworth
A guide will join your group to tour Ft. Leavenworth's well preserved post, pointing out many historical buildings and sites. Points of interest include Memorial Chapel, the command and General Staff College, Oregon-Santa Fe Trail marks, Buffalo Soldier Monument and a National Cemetery. Fee $4.00 per person. There is also a self-guided tour available if individual cars are to be used. Contact (913) 682-4113, $3.00 per person.
 
Frontier Army Museum
One of the finest collections of military horse drawn vehicles used in the westward expansion of this country. Covers period 1804-1917. Audio-visual slide program on the history of Fort Leavenworth as well as exhibits. Call (913) 684-3767 or 1-800-844-4114. Guided Tour lasts about 90 minutes, Self-Guided Tour , 45 minutes, donations accepted.
 
University of Saint Mary
Visitors are welcomed to visit the DePaul Library's Special Collections: the Sacred Scripture Collection, the Abraham Lincoln Collection, the Charles Dickens Collection, the Shakespeare Collection and the Kansas Collection. The college's park-like grounds include a wildlife preserve. To schedule a free tour of the Special Collections, call the DePaul Library, (913) 758-6153.
 
Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center
This tour could cover many areas depending upon the age and interest of the group. Possible areas of tour include Nursing Home Care Unit, consolidated laundry, craft shop area, recreation departments, famous "Believe It or Not Chapel," and National Cemetery. Tour lasts from one to two hours, depending upon interest. Teenagers to adults would be welcome. Contact (913) 682-2000, ext. 2017 or 2018.
 
Heimhof Winery and Gift Shop
Located in scenic rural Leavenworth, 20 minutes south of Fort Leavenworth. This small farm winery offers seven German-style wines with free wine-tasting and tours of the facility. The unique gift shop boasts of numerous unusual gift items. Ample parking. Groups as large as 25 persons by appointment. Call (913) 727-2627 or 727-3467.
 
First City Museum Tour
743 Delaware. Houses a 1913 C. W. Parker Carousel, made in Leavenworth (in the process of restoration), possibly the oldest primitive carousel in the United States, a mockup of the United States Penitentiary, plus other prison memorabilia. Open Thursday and Friday Noon to 4p.m.. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2p.m., or by appointment. Donations accepted. Call (913) 682-1866 (and leave message) or (800) 844-4114.
 
Richard Allen Cultural Center and Museum Tour
412 Kiowa. Located across the street from the historic Bethel A.M.E. Church which was part of the underground railroad. The center offers a glimpse into the history of African-Americans locally and nationwide and was created to ensure that their rich heritage and their profound effect on American society would not be lost. The center is dedicated to researching, collecting, preserving and disseminating the history of African-Americans. Open Tuesday and Thursday, 1-3 p.m.; and Saturday, 10a.m.-1p.m. or by appointment, admission charged
