Delighting audiences first on the stage, then in film, the River City
Community Players are proud to bring "Steel Magnolias" to the
Leavenworth stage.
Robert Harling's "Steel Magnolias" examines the simple, subtle, and
powerful relationships among a circle of six women in a semi rural
Louisiana community. Set within the bounds of Truvy Jones' beauty salon,
the opening scene finds Truvy, who feels "...there's no such thing as
natural beauty...", hiring Annelle Dupuy-- a young girl whose husband
has abandoned her, leaving a desperate spirit trying to deal with the
broken pieces of her heart and failed finances. Also gracing Truvy's
shop is Clairee Belcher, the lovable grand dame who longs for her late
husband, the mayor; and takes
great pains to avoid making her loneliness everyone else's problem.
Another central character is Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie, whose marriage,
illness, and ill advised pregnancy challenges her relationship with her
strong and loving mom, M-Lynn Eatenton. The cast is rounded out with the
irrepressible wealthy curmudgeon, Ouiser (pronounced "Weezer")
Boudreaux, whose spats with Clairee and M-Lynn's husband add a touch of
humor to this production.
Those who are familiar with RCCP may recognize five of the six players
from previous productions. Linda Finch (Truvy), Sarah Nickerson
(Shelby), Trisha Gleisberg (M-Lynn), Laurie Nesmith (Clairee), and Margo
Campsey (Ouiser) all have played lead or lead supporting roles in
previous productions. Sarah Perdue (Annelle), is a newcomer to our
stage, but not unknown to other area theaters.
According to the director, Bill Campsey, "With a play of this caliber, a
director's major responsibility is to cast well, set the scenes, sharpen
the delivery, and get the hell out of the way."
Performances of "Steel Magnolias" begin August 21 at 8:00 PM and run
August 22, 28, 29 at 8:00 PM with a 2:00 PM performance on August 30,
and will conclude with 8:00 PM performances on September 4 & 5.
