RIVER CITY CONNECTION TOUR - ATCHISON

| During
the mid-1800's, Atchison was known as an important center of overland
freighting. In 1859, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company
was founded in Atchison. A renovated 1880's era fi-eight depot now houses
the Santa Fe Depot Visitors Center, historical museum and gift shop. An
antique railcar museum is located nearby. Famous aviatrix, Amelia Earhart, was born in Atchison in 1897. Her accomplishments included being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. At the height of her international fame, Amelia Earhart disappeared during a flight around the world in 1937. Her birthplace is listed on-the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public for touring. Scores of magnificent 19th century mansions and other buildings reflecting Old World charm are located on the beautiful Missouri River bluffs.
